Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Indexed Universal Life insurance for truck drivers, answered without the sales pitch.

General IUL Questions

What is Indexed Universal Life Insurance?+

Indexed Universal Life (IUL) is permanent life insurance that pairs a death benefit with a cash value account. The cash value is credited based on the performance of a market index such as the S&P 500, up to a cap rate, with a guaranteed floor — typically 0% — that protects it from index losses.

How is IUL different from term life insurance?+

Term life covers you for a set number of years and pays only if you die during that window. IUL is permanent, builds cash value you can access while alive, and does not expire as long as the policy stays funded. Term is cheaper; IUL does more.

Is IUL right for truckers?+

It fits drivers well because it is portable between carriers, premiums can flex with freight income, and living benefit riders can pay out if illness or injury ends your driving. It is not right for everyone — if your only goal is the largest death benefit for the lowest cost, term may fit better.

Accessing Your Cash Value

Can I access my cash value while I'm alive?+

Yes. Once cash value accumulates you can borrow against it or take withdrawals. Both reduce your cash value and death benefit until repaid.

Are loans from my IUL policy taxable?+

Loans from a properly structured, non-MEC policy are generally not treated as taxable income. Tax treatment depends on how the policy is funded and maintained — talk to a tax professional about your situation.

Can I use my cash value for retirement income?+

That is one of the main reasons drivers buy it. Many people take policy loans in retirement to supplement income without generating a taxable withdrawal the way a 401(k) or IRA does.

What happens if I take a loan and don't repay it?+

Unpaid loan balances plus accrued interest are subtracted from the death benefit. If loans and interest grow larger than the cash value, the policy can lapse — and a lapse with an outstanding loan can create a taxable event.

Portability & Flexibility

Does my IUL policy move with me if I change jobs?+

Yes. The policy is yours, not your carrier's. Switch companies, go owner-operator or leave trucking entirely and the policy and its cash value stay with you.

What if I become disabled or can't work?+

Riders such as waiver of premium and living benefits can help. Depending on the rider and the diagnosis, premiums may be covered for you or you may be able to access part of the death benefit while alive.

Can I change my coverage amount later?+

In many cases yes. Increases usually require new underwriting; decreases are generally simpler but may affect cash value and could trigger charges.

Getting Started

How do I get started with an IUL policy?+

Answer eight quick questions in our driver questionnaire. We match your age, health, budget and driving setup against carriers that underwrite drivers well, and a licensed agent walks you through the real numbers.

Do I need a medical exam?+

Most drivers qualify without one. Many carriers now approve on health questions and data checks alone — no lab work, no clinic visit, no lost driving days.

How long does it take to get approved?+

Accelerated underwriting can approve in as little as 24 to 72 hours. Cases that need medical records typically take two to six weeks.

Can I get a quote without committing?+

Yes. Checking your options is free, there is no obligation, and we do not ask for your Social Security number or run a credit pull to show you numbers.

Cash Value & Growth

How does the cash value grow in an IUL policy?+

After the cost of insurance and fees, remaining premium goes into your cash value, which is credited based on the movement of a chosen index over each crediting period. Index crediting typically excludes dividends.

What is a cap rate and floor rate?+

The cap is the maximum credited rate in a period — if the cap is 10% and the index returns 18%, you are credited 10%. The floor is the minimum, typically 0%, so a negative index year credits nothing rather than a loss.

Can I lose money in an IUL policy?+

You are protected from index losses by the floor, but policy charges, fees and loan interest still apply and can reduce cash value — especially in early years or if the policy is underfunded. Surrendering early can also produce a loss.

How quickly does cash value build up?+

Early years go mostly toward the cost of insurance and policy charges, so meaningful cash value usually takes several years. IUL is a long-horizon strategy, not a savings account.

Premiums & Costs

How much do IUL policies cost?+

It depends on your age, health, tobacco use, coverage amount, riders and how the policy is structured. Many drivers start somewhere between $100 and $500 per month, but there is no single answer until we run your numbers.

Can I adjust my premium payments?+

Yes, within policy limits. Pay more during strong months, dial back during slow freight — as long as the policy keeps enough value to cover its charges.

What happens if I can't pay my premium?+

Accumulated cash value can cover charges for a while, keeping the policy in force. If value runs out, the policy enters a grace period and can lapse — call us before that happens; there are usually options.

Are there fees associated with IUL policies?+

Yes. Expect the cost of insurance, premium loads, administrative charges, rider charges and surrender charges in the early years. Any illustration we show you spells them out.

Taxes & Benefits

What are the tax advantages of IUL?+

Cash value grows tax-deferred, properly structured policy loans are generally income-tax-free, and the death benefit is generally paid to beneficiaries income-tax-free.

Is the death benefit taxable?+

Life insurance death benefits are generally not subject to federal income tax for beneficiaries. Estate tax treatment can differ depending on ownership — ask a tax advisor.

Will IUL affect my Social Security benefits?+

Policy loans are generally not counted as income the way retirement account withdrawals are, so for many people they do not affect the taxation of Social Security benefits. Your situation should be reviewed with a tax professional.
